Data Center Ordinance Update #3 - October 13, 2025

Posted on October 13, 2025 at 3:49 PM by Stephanie Trottier

City officials have held two joint workshop sessions on September 24 and October 7, 2025, to review and discuss the draft zoning ordinance following two formal public hearings held at the Planning Commission meetings on August 19 and September 2, 2025.

The purpose of these joint workshop discussions is to carefully consider public feedback and address requests for additional time to refine the proposed ordinance regulating data center development in Monticello.

At the most recent workshop on October 7, members of the Planning Commission and City Council continued their discussion. Following the discussion, staff indicated that they would revise the draft ordinance based on their feedback. Once the updates are ready, staff will bring the revised draft back to another joint workshop for further review before it returns to a Planning Commission meeting for a new public hearing.

When the updated ordinance is placed on a Planning Commission agenda, community members will have another opportunity to share formal feedback during the public hearing. Following that hearing, the Planning Commission will make a recommendation to the City Council on whether to adopt the ordinance. Following this, the ordinance will be brought to a City Council meeting for final consideration. Please note that public hearings for zoning ordinance amendments occur at the Planning Commission level; the City Council does not hold an additional public hearing before final consideration.

The date for the upcoming additional workshop has not yet been announced. As a reminder, all workshops are open to the public to observe. While public comment is not taken during these sessions, they are an important part of the City’s transparent decision-making process. Community members will have additional opportunities to share input at a future public hearing or by submitting written comments.

Official notices for all public meetings, including workshops and hearings, are published in the Monticello Times (the City’s official newspaper for public notifications) and displayed in the Monticello Community Center hallway. The City website is a secondary and unofficial resource for your convenience.

We appreciate the community’s continued engagement and thoughtful input throughout the ordinance process.
